Committee on Transport and Tourism – Study requested by TRAN Committee, commissioned and managed by the Policy Department – “Postal services in the EU”
Brussels, 21 January 2020
The study provides a comprehensive analysis of postal and delivery services in the EU. Digitalization is pointed out as a major factor that has transformed the postal sector in recent years which has led to a decrease in letter post volumes and an increase in e-commerce parcels. Furthermore, the study highlights the challenges in regulation the EU postal sector must face and stresses the importance of a sustainable postal sector. The study concludes with recommendations for EU postal policy makers.
A presentation of the study took place on 3 December 2019 and focused on the following topics:
• Main developments in the EU postal sector
• Challenges, opportunities and policy responses
• Recommendations for EU postal policy makers.
The presentation was followed by questions from the Members and a stimulating debate.
