The presentation of the study took place on 14 February 2024 and focused on the following topics:
- Administrative characteristics of the nine EU outermost regions
- Article 349 TFEU
- Climate, social, economic and demographic characteristics
- Convergence towards EU average
- Cohesion Policy impact
The expert highlighted that, despite facing common challenges, the outermost regions have strong differences in their governance structures and socio-economic dynamics. This diversity necessitates tailor-made, place-based and multilevel governance strategies to promote sustainable and inclusive growth.
The presentation was followed by questions from the Members and a stimulating debate on the natural and geo-strategic assets of the EU’s outermost regions. Discussions underscored the need for increased investment in human capital and the importance of making Cohesion Policy stronger to enhance outermost regions.
