The AGRI Committee met on 10 May for a presentation of a study on “The future of the European farming model – socio-economic and territorial implications of the decline in the number of farms and farmers in the EU”. With a focus on the possible evolutions of and threats to the European farming model, this research project provided useful inputs on the sharp decline in farm numbers expected by 2040 (from 10 to 3.9 million farms across the EU, an impressive 62% decrease as compared to 2016 figures), the related structural drivers and how the Common agricultural policy could help support farm diversity and generational renewal.
