HOUS Workshop – Dynamics in the housing crisis: Vulnerable groups, short-term rentals, and construction

The workshop on dynamics in the housing crisis, looking specifically at vulnerable groups, short-term rentals, and construction and renovation, will take place on Monday 3 November during the HOUS Committee meeting.
The housing crisis is multi-faceted, with factors interdependently impacting the situation. To tackle it, one cannot look at one solution or issue alone. That is why the workshop on dynamics in the housing crisis will feature three sessions on important aspects of the problem.
The first session focusses on vulnerable groups that are disproportionately affected by the crisis, namely younger people, households with children, and older people. These groups experience the crisis in different ways, reflecting varied socio-economic circumstances. The session will be based on findings from the recent publication on Housing affordability problems across socio-demographic groups.
The second session will discuss short-term rental (STR) accommodations in the EU. The growing prevalence of STRs adds pressure to housing stocks in many areas. Two presentations will discuss in more detail the insights from the recent publications on The regulatory aspects of STRs in the EU and Legal developments of STR accommodations in the EU.
The third session will address construction and renovation. In many EU countries, the construction of new homes is insufficient, affecting housing affordability. At the same time, renovations of old, energy-inefficient buildings are progressing too slowly. The presentation will delve into the findings from the recent publication on Construction and Renovation in the EU Housing Markets: Challenges and Opportunities to Ensure Affordability.
