The workshop took place on 3 October 2024 with three topics on the agenda :

  • Developments on the global food commodity markets, food price and food security by Ms Monika TOTHOVA, Senior Economist, Markets and Trade Division, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Rome, Italy.
  • Prices, costs and profits along the chain, a look at the Netherlands by Mr Michiel VAN GALEN, Senior project manager and researcher – Wageningen University & Research, the Netherlands.
  • Food price shocks and food consumption by Ms Céline BONNET ; Director of Research at Institut National de la Recherche pour l’Agriculture et l’Environnement (INRAE), Toulouse School of Economics (TSE-R), France.

The workshop follows-up on the EP’s resolution of 24 March 2022 on ‘The need for an urgent EU action plan to ensure food security inside and outside the EU in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine’. Experts provided a state of play on food inflation and food security, analysed the power balance in the EU food sector’s value chain and highlighted the changes in consumption patterns following price shocks.

The presentation by the experts was followed by an exchange of views with the European parliament members (MEPs). MEPs welcomed the relevance of the workshop and were thankful for the data and analysis provided by the speakers on market developments, the value chain (notably price transmission mechanisms and margins) and the impact of food inflation on food security and food consumption. Several interventions called for recommendations regarding in particular the market power of farmers and available options to increase farm incomes without impacting consumers.
